Long Distance Running Routes for Prospect Park, Brooklyn, by Robert Matson, is a collection of 21 training routes in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, covering distances from 3 through 20 miles (including 4 miles, 5 miles, 6 miles, 7 miles, and onward). Following the park's roads, the routes include total elevation gain as well as mileage.
Using 76 illustrations and two short pages of text, this carefully designed 16-page guide was created specially for Prospect Park's thousands of runners, walkers, cyclists and skaters. Routes range from the "easy" -- a 1.51-mile loop with a total of 87 feet of vertical climb -- to the "difficult" -- a 20.02-mile with 979 feet of climb.
Meant for everyone, no matter where they live around the park, there are routes that start and end from every park entrance: north, south, east or west.
To keep things interesting, the routes maximize hills and minimize "out-and-backs" and can go clockwise or counterclockwise according to preference.
Bicyclists, roller skaters and cross-training runners and walkers will particularly appreciate the fact that many routes, including the 17-, 12- and 11-milers, follow the flow of traffic from start to finish.
Written and illustrated by artist -- and amateur runner and bicyclist -- Robert Matson, who, along with his wife, has used Prospect Park to train for several marathons. Robert is one of the Prospect Park Track Club's Race Directors for the Summer Speed Series 5k races.
